With winter well and truly arrived in East Lothian, it can be easy to get couped up in your home over the colder months.

However, the cold weather can often be a great time to get out in nature and embrace the outdoors so long as you're careful and watch out for hazardous conditions.

So with all this in mind, pop on a warm jacket and get out there and explore what East Lothian has to offer this winter.

Here are 4 of the region's best walking routes to go on during the winter months:
Hedderwick Sands

If you're looking for an easier walk to ease yourself into going outdoors in wintertime, then look no further than Hedderwick Sands which is a short distance from Dunbar.

The path is largely sheltered by large pine trees from the elements and is just under three miles long.

The route also offers some amazing views of the North Sea and provides a nice starting point for many.

Gifford and Yester Castle

If you're wanting something a bit more inland then Gifford and Yester Castle has you covered.

This walking route is largely wooded and contains the ruins of Yester Castle, allowing walkers to experience nature and explore some of the region's rich history.

North Berwick Law

This route requires a lot more preparation and should be attempted in calmer conditions as the top of the hill can become windy due to its proximity to the sea.

The site has a number of important landmarks, including military lookouts from the Napoleonic and Second World Wars as well as views of surrounding sites like Bass Rock.

Alternatively, walkers can stay near the bottom of the formation and take in the surrounding countryside without going up the incline.

Pencaitland Railway Walk

This route, as the name suggests, was once a train line running through much of East Lothian.

The track closed in 1965 and is now enjoyed as a popular walking spot with its paved routes perfect for walkers and cyclists.

The path is mostly sheltered by trees and provides lovely winter views of the surrounding landscape.
