THIS week, the Scottish National Party selected Humza Yousaf as its next leader, and I would like to extend my congratulations to Humza. We must now turn our attention to the future and continue to do what we do best. The SNP Government under Nicola Sturgeon laid strong foundations for a fairer progressive Scotland. It is important we do not lose sight of what we have already achieved.

These progressive policies such as the Baby Box, the introduction of seven social security benefits only available to people in Scotland and minimum unit pricing have all improved the lives of many in Scotland. Twelve Scottish Government social security benefits will be increased by 10.1 per cent on April 1, backed by investment of around £430 million, and recent reports estimate 156 deaths were averted each year following the implementation of minimum unit pricing.

However, I know we still have room for further progress and that must not be stagnated. It is also a time to think about a new direction – for our economy, our businesses and the independence cause. I hope the next government under the new First Minister will not only prioritise the cost-of-living crisis but our businesses. This is also a chance to review policies such as the deposit return scheme and ensure that this works for all businesses before implementation. I look forward to working with Humza in ensuring all of this can be achieved to ensure Scotland is a better place for all.

It is not only the party that needs unity but the people of Scotland. We are all experiencing the worst financial hardships of our lifetimes and I know my constituents will be looking at the new First Minister for direction and support. I know businesses in my constituency will be looking for support.

As constituency MSP for Midlothian North and Musselburgh, I will continue to put the best interests of my constituents, their businesses and our communities at the forefront and ensure the new First Minister has this constituency’s best interests at heart.
