PUPILS in S1-3 at North Berwick High School will be at school one half day a week with senior pupils in either three or four half days a week.

High schools across East Lothian have been revealing their plans for phased returns to school, all due to begin on Monday.

North Berwick High School has joined Preston Lodge High School, Dunbar Grammar School and Knox Academy in revealing its plans.

The plans will run for three weeks (until the Easter holidays) and at North Berwick High School there have been three separate timetables revealed in a letter to parents today (Wednesday) by the school’s headteacher Lauren Rodger.

The school has also prioritised face to face teaching for senior pupils, all of whom are undertaking national qualifications.

The plan for next week (March 15-19) is detailed in the table below:

In weeks two (March 22-26) and three (March 29-April 1), the order in which senior students are in the classroom slightly changes with S3 students not in school in the afternoon of March 31.

All pupils are asked to adhere to two metres social distancing and wear face coverings while in the school building.

Those in S1-3 will be in classes of no more than 10 to ensure physical distancing, pupils are not guaranteed to receive a lesson in all of their subjects over the three weeks or with their regular teacher.

There is some slight changes and adaptations for classes for senior pupils.

These include some classes coming in at a separate time from the other subjects in the column to “better facilitate provision of specialist staff” such as those taking Higher music, practical subjects already timetabled now having some timing changes and modern languages where assessments are taking place so that senior pupils are only in school at their allotted assessment time and not for the full three-hour block.

Mrs Rodger said that more information will be sent to parents by the end of the week, including an individual timetable for each pupil and those requiring school transport.

She added: “Please note that attendance in school is compulsory at all times when a pupil is timetabled to be in the building. If your child is ill and unable to attend school, please notify us via the absence line as normal.”

While not in school, all pupils will continue remote learning at home.

Apart from those in the school hub, who will come out of the hub to join their classmates during timetabled sessions, pupils will not be in school over lunch time but will be allocated a break during their three hour block.

Mrs Rodger said: “While it is proving to be a challenge to produce a timetable for the whole school in such a short time and with so many restrictions, there is no doubt that school staff are very much looking forward to welcoming all our pupils back into the building from Monday.

“School may feel different over this three week period, but our experience of running limited in-school learning throughout this term tells us that it will be a very worthwhile experience for all, and it will also help to prepare us for the full return to school after the Easter holiday.”
