PUPILS in S1-3 at Preston Lodge High School will be back in school for one half day a week.

While S4s will return for two half-days a week – more if they are required to undertake practical work – and S5s and S6s are timetabled for three half-days per week.

Schools across East Lothian are due to welcome pupils back through the doors on Monday.

Headteachers are revealing the new timetables, which have been introduced.

Gavin Clark, headteacher at Preston Lodge High School, Prestonpans, outlined how things would look (see table below).

He said: “The prime purpose of a return to school before Easter is to allow students to get used to being back in school and to start seeing friends again, both of which we know will have a positive impact on their wellbeing.

“As directed, we have prioritised senior phase students, whilst ensuring that every student is in school at least once each week.”

A letter was sent out to parents and carers this week outlining how the timetable will look, with all students to wear face coverings, other than those with exemptions, at the school.

  • Student and staff safety will be our top priority.
  • Senior Phase students will attend each of their subjects each week.
  • Our timetabling of the Senior Phase will maximise direct contact with each student’s usual teacher.
  • We will keep our current Senior Phase programme in place exactly as it is, maximising time for Senior Phase students to complete practical work for SQA courses.
  • S1-3 students will be in school for one half day per week, seeing most of their usual teachers over the three weeks.
  • Our existing critical childcare ‘hub’ provision will continue, offering extended time in school for the children of key workers and those who most require that support.

For S4-6 students, to allow two-metre distancing in the classrooms, the classes will be split into groups of six to 10 students, depending on room size.

Mr Clark added: “Remote learning will continue to be a key feature of the three week period from March 15 to Easter, and we expect all students to maintain their commitment to work set on Google Classrooms.

“Whilst more time in school inevitably means less time for teachers to commit to remote learning, subject teams have already drawn up careful plans to ensure continuity and effectiveness in remote learning.”

To support the return to school, a parents’ forum is taking place next Thursday (March 19), with an invitation to be included in the school's update e-mail on Friday.
