EAST Lothian athletes are preparing to start their quest to strike gold at the Commonwealth Games.
The county is represented in athletics, bowls, boxing and swimming at the international event in Glasgow.
The opening ceremony takes place today (Thursday) and Gifford’s Beth Riva is among the first athletes to take part in the summer Games.
The 23-year-old will team up with Caroline Brown in the Women’s Pairs, which takes place in today’s first session between 9.30am and 4.25pm at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC).
A winner will be crowned on Tuesday.
Her uncle, Scottish bowls legend Alex Marshall, is also flying the flag as he takes part in an incredible eighth Games.
His latest campaign, alongside former East Lothian bowler Paul Foster, gets under way on Tuesday afternoon in the Men’s Pairs.
The final of the Men’s Pairs will be next Sunday (August 2).
Meanwhile, Lara Brown will begin her bid for gold on Sunday.
The boxer, who trains at the Bronx Boxing Gym in Tranent, is competing in the women’s featherweight 57kg category.
Brown, whose dad Nicky is from Tranent and mum Susannah Mack is from Pencaitland, will be aiming to progress from the last 16 of the tournament. The final takes place next Saturday (August 1).
At Scotstoun Stadium, Josh Kerr will be among those aiming to impress on the athletics track.
The son of former Haddington rugby player John Kerr and Jill is to be joined by Neil Gourley and Jake Wightman in the mile run.
Former Tranent Amateur Swimming Club member Stephen Clegg is one of five Scottish swimmers with an East Lothian connection.
He will be joined by older brother James in the pool at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
Sam Downie, who represented Musselburgh Amateur Swimming Club, is also among those taking the plunge. Luke Hornsey, who grew up in Tranent, will compete in the 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle while former Ross High School pupil Stefan Krawiec takes part in the 100m freestyle.
Swimming event take place from tomorrow (Friday) to Wednesday.
