BOXER Lee McGregor is hoping for “a dream scenario” as he gets ready to step back into the ring.
The lightweight star will fight at Doncaster Rovers’ Keepmoat Stadium tonight (Saturday) with the possibility of a world title on the line, just hours after Hearts could wrap up the Scottish Premiership title.
McGregor, who returned to the ring in March, was confident that there would be a big travelling support heading south of the Border, regardless of the potential for Scottish football history.
He said: “I will take a full load down there.
“A lot of my support are Hearts fans and everybody is on hold just now because that could go to the last game of the season.
“Hearts could win the league the same day as my fight.
“It’s a bit of a nightmare but, regardless, I will still take good numbers down there.
“My dream scenario is Hearts have got the league wrapped up by then but there are going to be many twists and turns.
“We will have to wait and see – it could be one of the best weekends!”
McGregor, who lives in the west of the county, took his record to 16-2-1 when he defeated Emiliano Leonel Araujo in Glasgow.
Twenty-nine-year-old McGregor, who had lost out to fellow Scotsman Nathaniel Collins prior to his last bout, was back in the gym just a few days after that victory and has been keen to get back in the ring as quickly as possible.
Now, he has been getting ready to face Michael Gomez Jr, whose dad, Michael Gomez, famously stopped Scotsman Alex Arthur at Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Stadium in 2003.
McGregor was expecting a real fight when the two come head-to-head in Yorkshire.
He said: “He is tough.
“In terms of achievement level and amateur pedigree, I have got the advantage there, but he is just tough.
“He is coming off the back of a good win [against Jordan Flynn].”
As well as the chance to secure back-to-back wins, it is understood that an international title could be on the line for the victor.
The bout will also give both fighters the chance to shine in front of not just thousands of people in attendance but those watching at home on DAZN.
McGregor said: “It is big.
“It is a massive card at Doncaster Rovers Football Club with David Allen against Filip Hrgovic.
“They are expecting 10,000 there, so it is a massive stage.
“It is where I belong, where I perform, and I am just buzzing to get back in amongst it.
“It has been a rocky road and I am sick of going on about it.
“I almost feel people get dragged into that conversation with me and my boxing career.
“This time, I just want this to be positive, keep as positive as possible.
“Everybody knows it is tough but I don’t want anybody feeling sorry for me. I want to get back to the top.”
