A GROUP of young surfers turned in starring performances to finish on the podium in a national series.
Members of Belhaven Surf Club made the more-than-200-mile journey north to Sandend, near Buckie, for the final leg of the Junior series.
The competition, which stopped off in Fraserburgh, Thurso and Aberdeen before the final leg on the Moray coast, tests the skills of young surfers from across Scotland.
Sam Christopherson, senior instructor at Dunbar-based Coast to Coast Surf School, said: “We had high expectations of a great competition and were not disappointed, being greeted with shoulder to head high clean waves in the sunshine!”
At the competition, the surf club had seven of the 19 finalists.
Dylan Whaley (Dunbar) was the youngest of the county club’s finalists, finishing third in the mixed under-12 years.
Fellow Dunbar surfer Tessa Russel finished fourth in the under-14 years, with fellow club member Erin Paterson (North Berwick) the standout in winning the title.
In the under-14 years boys, Joel Christopherson (Dunbar) finished third in a high-quality field of national team surfers.
Meanwhile, in the under-18 years girls, Rosie Moore (Dunbar), who is just 15, surfed well to make the final and finish fourth behind three more experienced surfers.
Finally, in the under-18 years boys, the stand-out event, Belhaven Surf Club had two finalists.
North Berwick’s Charlie Pugh put a series of great waves together for third spot, while Dunbar’s Tam Hood put together excellent waves that showed speed, power and flow to win the title.
Mr Christopherson praised the hard-working surfers and said: “I am really pleased for all our young surfers that took part this year.
“It’s great to see juniors that have started with Coast to Coast Surf School in normal lessons, graduate to the high-performance surf club and now be winning national titles or heading to Peru with the national team for the World Championships.”
