STRIKER Cammie Ross is celebrating after finishing top scorer of this season’s Scottish Cup.

The prolific frontman bagged six goals over three games as part of Tranent’s Road to Hampden, which was ended in the third round.

Celtic beat Rangers in the final last month thanks to a late Adam Idah goal but that was not enough to stop Ross finishing the top scorer.

The hitman was among those watching the FA Cup final between Manchester United and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium but revealed he had an eye on the Old Firm contest some 400 miles north.

He said: “Obviously, I knew it was getting closer the more the rounds went on.

“It was down to Daizen Maeda [who had four goals before the final] and I was waiting to see if he got two or Cyriel Dessers, who needed to score three.

“I was at the FA Cup Final and I was refreshing my phone to see if anybody had scored.”

Ross got his Scottish Cup campaign under way back in September – some eight months before the showcase final.

A double against Hutchison Vale in the first round was followed by four as Tranent thumped East Kilbride 7-0.

The 25-year-old failed to find the target as the Belters were knocked out by Forfar Athletic in a hard-fought third round contest.

The former Broxburn player said: “After the second round, I was sitting on six.

“I started looking online and seeing what players had finished on in previous years.

“I realised at that point I had a chance and I was hoping to get one or two more.

“I saw that seven, if I got that, would almost guarantee it going off previous years unless I was really unlucky.

“I knew I still had a good chance.”

The six strikes during the Scottish Cup were just part of a phenomenal season in front of goal for the Foresters Park star.

Forty-four goals in 42 starts helped Ian Little’s men to finish fifth in the Scottish Lowland Football League (SLFL).

He was also part of the Tranent side that lifted the Lowland League Cup following a penalty shootout triumph over eventual league champions East Kilbride, who missed out on the chance to be promoted to the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) after going down to Stranraer.

Ross, who works as a plumber, told Courier Sport how playing in a settled position and growing confidence helped him hit the impressive goalscoring tally.

He said: “If someone had offered me 20 this season I would have maybe taken it.

“As a striker, you go on a run at some parts of the season.

“I was scoring highly in some games as well.

“There was definitely a mental switch within myself.

“Last season I was going in thinking it would be good to get a goal and now there are games where I have been turning up and thinking how many rather than if I get a goal.”

He will again be part of Little’s squad as Tranent aim to build on two impressive campaigns at tier five of the Scottish football pyramid.

Pre-season training will likely kick off within a matter of weeks.

Ross, who lives at Shawfair, said: “I’m not actually sure when it starts but I am going to the Euros with some of my friends.

“It will be just after that, maybe the tail end of June.

“Half of me wants to go back because I am starting to miss it – with the changing room and the socialising!”
