AN HISTORIC season could yet get even better for Musselburgh RFC, according to stalwart Sandy Watt.

The winger recorded his 150th appearance for the club shortly before Christmas and is confident that the side can finish an already-impressive campaign on a high.

Already, they have picked up a record number of points from a Premiership season but, with two games to play, there is still work to be done.

He said: “Last season, we got new coaches in and it was just everybody finding their feet.

“This season, we have kicked on with a very similar squad.

“We have always been there or thereabouts.

“It was wee errors and cohesion but this year we have just gelled as a group and really kicked on.

“It was towards the tail end of last season, we went four or five wins in a row.

“This season we have kicked on, we started to gel as a team and it has been a brilliant season.”

In the last three campaigns, Musselburgh have picked up 34, 31 and 30 points, which has been good enough to finish eighth, seventh and ninth respectively in the top flight of Scottish rugby.

Already, with games to spare, the Stoneyhill outfit have surpassed their best points total in the league.

Watt said: “We have just been playing a better brand of rugby.

“We are scoring more tries and we are on 40 points.

“It is that tight a league that last year 40 points probably got you fifth place.

“This year, it is so tight and we are hoping to end the season with around 50 points.

“It has been a far, far better season in terms of getting wins, scoring tries, all our statistics this season are so much better – not just points.”

Twenty-seven-year-old Watt, who is joined in the team by older brother Rory, 28, felt that changes off the park had also benefited the team on the field.

He said: “I think there has been that mental change from new faces in the league, trying to scrape wins and staying up to actually we are a team that can compete with anyone in the league.

“We have proven it this year – we have beaten Marr and we just got beat off Hawick, the league leaders.

“That mindset switched from being surviving to competing – that has been the big mindset change.”

Watt, who lives in Portobello, made his debut a decade ago when Musselburgh took on Lasswade.

Since then, the club have been on an upwards trajectory, with the Watt brothers at the heart of the progression.

The younger brother, who was presented with a bottle of wine to mark the milestone appearance against Selkirk, struggled to pick out any single high point and said: “My whole career at Musselburgh has been high points.”

He added: “My first season, we won National League Division Two to get promoted to National League Division One.

“That was the first time in 30 years that the club had won a league.

“My career started on a high from the get-go at Musselburgh.

“In my 150 caps, we have never been relegated, which is quite a big thing for Musselburgh as well.

“There was the high of this season as well, winning the Bill McLaren Shield for the first time, which was massive for the club.”
