JOE Townshend and Stefan Krawiec have been celebrating medal success at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

The seventh edition of the international event is taking place in Trinidad and Tobago with East Lothian athletes among the medals.

Former Dunbar RFC prospect Townshend was part of the rugby sevens side that secured gold in dramatic fashion.

Scotland faced Fiji in the final of the competition having already lost to the opposition 32-5.

The scores were locked together at full-time before a Scottish extra time try secured a 25-20 win and the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Krawiec, who was joined by netballer Niamh Trainer as Scotland’s flagbearer at the event in the Hasely Crawford Stadium, has been busy in the pool.

The East Lothian Swim Team member finished fifth in the final of the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly and was part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team who took silver.

Krawiec finished fifth in his heat for the 200m freestyle and then finished eighth in the final of the 50m freestyle after being unable to reach the final of the 200m butterfly.

Speaking ahead of the opening ceremony, the teenager said: “I’m very honoured.

“I was just happy to be at this competition in the first place, to represent Scotland at this high level, but then to find out I’ll be carrying the flag, it’s a dream come true.

“I’m a bit nervous but there’s a lot of pride and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I want to represent Scotland to the best of my ability, put in a good performance and support my team mates all the way through the competition and just enjoy it.”

Dirleton’s Heidi Dawson is also at the Caribbean competition as part of Scotland’s netball squad, who will look to secure bronze against England today (Thursday).

They lost their opening match with Australia, 29-8, but bounced back to defeat the hosts, 37-14.

Scotland would defeat Canada 24-4 but lost out to South Africa, 51-20.

Finally, athlete Corey Campbell was forced to withdraw from the competition.

The Dunbar teenager had been due to compete in the 1,500m and 3,000m on the track but was forced to step aside through injury.

Chris Purdie, Team Scotland Chef de Mission, offered “sincere commiserations” to Campbell.

He said: “I know just how much he was looking forward to representing Team Scotland here at Trinbago 2023 and to succumb to injury at this late stage is a huge blow.

“We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back in action soon.”
