EIGHT young swimmers from East Lothian Swim Team (ELST) headed south last week to compete in the British Swimming Summer Championships at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

The Sheffield event brings together the best swimmers from across the UK, and the ELST swimmers all swam very well with some fantastic performances.

Among those competing were:

  • Girls’ 13-14 years – Zara Krawiec qualified for seven events (400m Individual Medley (IM), 100m and 200m breaststroke, 200m and 400m freestyle, 100m backstroke and the 100m butterfly), making five finals and just missing out on the medals with two fourth place finishes in 400m events.
  • Girls’ 16 years – Tegan Black swam in two events (400m IM and 200m breaststroke), finishing in the top 20 in both.
  • Boys’ 16 years – Zach Slater took part in two freestyle events (50m and 200m), just missing out on reaching the finals of both.
  • Boys’ 17 years – Luke Hornsey had an amazing meet, winning four bronze medals in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle events. Calum Peebles qualified for four events (50m freestyle and the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events), making the final of the 200m backstroke finishing seventh.

The team also qualified for one relay event:

  • Boys’ 14-16 years – Slater was joined by Ross Anderton, Conner Aspinall and Declan Kay for the 4x100m freestyle relay, finishing 21st overall.

Danny Kirkham, ELST performance squad coach, was delighted with all the swimmers’ efforts.

He said: “Qualifying for the British Swimming Summer Championships is an amazing achievement for these incredibly talented swimmers, and a real testament for all the hard-work they put into training.

“I could not have been prouder of their efforts, especially coming at the end of a long hard season for them.”
