Logan Kennedy returns with double gold from international bowls event

The first of the action saw Kennedy team up with Aaron Miller, of Abbeyview Indoor Bowling Club, in the pairs for Scotland 2.

After the group stages of play, the newly formed pair sat top of the table and would tackle the Scotland 1 pairing of Megan Sproat and Jamie Noon, of Ardrossan Indoor Bowling Club, for the gold medal.

The final was as close an encounter as any would expect, Kennedy and Miller winning the opening set 9-7.

The pair entered the second set knowing that a draw would be enough to claim the gold and avoid the dreaded one-shot tie-break.

On script, the pairs entered the final end of the second set locked at 4-4. Miller and Kennedy lay the single shot they needed to win the first with Noon with one bowl to come, but the Ardrossan youngster delivered a set-winning bowl and forced the match into a tie-break.

A nervy shootout saw Miller playing the winning bowl to deliver the pairs gold medal to Scotland 2.

Meanwhile, Betts, disappointed with results in the triples, was determined to make up for it in the singles.

The youngster registered impressive high-scoring wins on his way to topping his group section and booking his place in the singles gold medal match representing Scotland 1.

Kennedy, buoyed after capturing the pairs gold, recomposed himself and also topped his group under the Scotland 2 banner to ensure the East Lothian juniors would return with at least two gold medals and a silver.

Betts took the early initiative in the final, sneaking the first set 9-7.

Kennedy returned the favour in the second set to level the match and force yet another one-end shootout for the gold medal.

Betts looked to have played the perfect end of bowls, holding the shot and seemingly covering bowls to ensure he secured the shot he needed.

But Kennedy was anything but done and, with his last bowl of the game, played an outstanding delivery just over the weight of a draw to dislodge Betts’ bowls and claim his second gold in as many days.

The youngsters’ performances, along with the triples gold secured by Scotland 2, was enough to regain the overall trophy, much to the delight of team managers Scott Kennedy and Thomas Notman.

Back on home soil, East Lothian Indoor Bowling Club gents recovered from last week’s league defeat as they saw off the challenge of bottom side East Kilbride.

Wins for Derek Oliver (+16) and Alan Young (+9), along with a draw for Billy Mellors, were more than enough to cover the single loss of the day for Lewis Betts (-10). The result sees East Lothian maintain second place in the group section.

East Lothian ladies met league leaders East Fife in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

The four ladies triples had a blistering start and raced to leads on all four rinks, a lead they continued to build over the opening hour of play.

East Fife rallied over the last five ends to reduce the deficit and scored a one-shot victory on one of the rinks, but East Lothian maintained three wins to secure an impressive 8-2 win.

Team manager Colin Penman is hoping the result can ignite the ladies’ league campaign this weekend.

They welcome East Fife to Meadowmill, where they will look to replicate the performance and result.

The East Lothian seniors entered their last league game knowing that progress to the knockout stages of the league was out of their control.

Wins for Tommy Young (+26), Graham Robertson (+10), Ali Russel (+4) and Willie Wood (+1) were enough to win but the result was not enough to overturn the shot advantage of West Lothian and Midlothian.
