TRANENT Juniors have moved up to second in the Scottish Lowland Football League (SLFL) after thumping Edinburgh University.

Colin Nish’s men had been due to face the Capital club on Boxing Day but the game at Foresters Park was moved forward.

Adam McGowan and Martin Maughan found the target in the first half but it was after the break that Tranent turned up the heat on their rivals.

Aiden Walsh scored his first for the club before McGowan and Maughan netted to make it 5-0.

Nicky Reid then notched a double and there was still time for McGowan, on loan from Hamilton Academical, to wrap up a hat-trick.

The three points moved Tranent above East Kilbride and into second spot in the SLFL.

Rangers B remain top of the table but are unable to contest a play-off tie with the winners of the Highland League.

Fifth placed University of Stirling would move above Tranent if they win both of their games in hand but Nish’s team have the advantage of points on the board.

Tranent face a trip to Nish's former side Cowdenbeath on Hogmanay.
