THERE is a belief in the Dunbar United dressing room that they can once again cause an upset in the Scottish Cup, says manager Kevin Haynes.

The Seasiders claimed their second scalp of the national cup competition in knocking out Clachnacuddin after extra time on Saturday.

That came after eliminating former Lowland League side Vale of Leithen in the preliminary round.

A second-round tie with Lowland League outfit Stirling University now awaits for Dunbar and Haynes believed they could again spring a surprise against opposition two tiers above them.

He said: “It is a great draw for the town and they really get behind us when we have got a Scottish Cup tie.

“It is a competition that the town buys into and I am glad we are at home.

“It is a very similar draw to what we have just faced – a tier five club who, on paper, should be better than us but that is not always the case.

“We will give it a good go and it is certainly a tie that is winnable being at home.”

Dunbar had trailed in the first half on Saturday before leading into the interval thanks to goals from Bob Berry and Cammy Dawson.

An equaliser from their long-travelled visitors sent the game into extra time before Aaron Congalton, son of club legend Jamie Congalaton, found the net to put Dunbar through to the next round.

With Musselburgh Athletic and Tranent Juniors knocked out of the competition at the weekend, Dunbar will fly the flag for the county in the second round on October 22.

Haynes was confident that his side could go further in the tournament, despite facing higher-placed opposition.

He said: “We have done it twice [knocked out a team from a league above] and who is to say we could not do it a third time?

“We have got a bit of determination and a bit of guile that we did not have last season.

“All the guys have got that bit of character, guys who want to win.

“The dressing room is night and day compared to last season, in my opinion.

“We have got that in us now and I don’t think we had it in us last year.

“Credit to the players, they will feel they can go in a bit fearless.”
