A TRIO of East Lothian rugby stars will fly the flag for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games later this month.

Team Scotland named their men’s and women’s sevens squads last Friday morning, with Harvey Elms, Liz Musgrove and Megan Gaffney all included.

Action takes place from July 29 to 31 at the competition, with contests being played at The Coventry Stadium.

Elms, of North Berwick, is part of the 13-man squad travelling to the international event.

He said: “It is pretty exciting.

“Obviously, these types of event don’t come around too often in a career.

“To be selected is huge.

“I think especially with the history and magnitude of the Commonwealth Games, to then actually be representing your country, that is massive.

“I think the fact it comes around every four years as well makes it feel that much bigger.”

The 27-year-old is making his Commonwealth Games debut, having narrowly missed out on selection for the 2018 event on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Now, he is determined to make up for lost time, with the Scots keen not to return from Birmingham empty-handed.

He said: “We want to go and medal.

“We want to see some tangible success and we believe we can do that.

“The season has been up and down but we have definitely had enough performances to show we can beat anyone.

“It is just about getting these 14-minute performances.”

Gaffney, also of North Berwick, and Musgrove, who grew up just outside the town, make up two members of the 13-woman squad.

Scott Forrest, head coach for Team Scotland’s Women’s squad, added: “There’s a special feeling going into these Games, given they are the first Scotland has qualified for.

“The players named, as well as those who pushed for selection, put in so much effort to prepare for Birmingham and we can’t wait to get started.”
