EAST Lothian swimming star Sam Downie is hailing a new landmark in his career as he made his debut at the World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira.

The East Lothian Swim Team member participated in two events in Portugal as he donned Team GB colours for the first time at the tender age of 16.

Competing in the S8 100m backstroke, 400m freestyle and team relay, he scored a personal best in the freestyle on his way to a seventh-place finish.

He would also claim seventh in his favoured 100m backstroke, delivering elite performances in his first appearance at a senior international competition.

Downie shared his delight at his performances but was eager to make the next step and prove he was capable of even more.

He said: “I’m happy. I know I’m capable of a lot more but it’s been a busy two days, with two 400 metres and then racing again the next day.

“I can’t complain too much, but I know I’m capable of more.

“It’s helped me improve on what I need to do between the two days, how to recover properly, and I did feel and see an improvement from heats to finals, so I think I’ve done something right.

“I will be focused, I’d love an opportunity to race in the relay.

“I really enjoy watching them and I’d really like to take part in.

“It’s something I’m interested in, we’ll have to see how it goes.”

He will hope to conclude his tournament today (Thursday) with the 4x100 34 medley.

With the team still to be confirmed, he continues to train hard on the Atlantic island hoping to be selected and end his debut World Championship on a high.
