Longniddry Villa are celebrating a double after taking home their second cup in as many weeks.

The county side dispatched Bonnyrigg Rose Whites 1-0 in the U18 South East Region Cup at New Countess Park in Dunbar on Saturday.

Last weekend, Villa ended a four-match losing run to defeat Edinburgh South 2-0 in the David Murray Cup and they would keep the momentum going in Dunbar.

The match started in scrappy fashion, both sides eager to play for the counter-attack, with the keepers on each side rarely being threatened.

Villa would make the breakthrough just before the half, Hugh Kerr with the strike that would ultimately decide the fixture and bring the side back-to-back cup triumphs.

Gary Risi, coach at Longniddry Villa, was massively proud of the boys’ achievements, saying that their double success had proved so many doubters wrong.

He said: “I’m really proud, at the beginning of the season it was up in the air if we were going to keep going.

“They pulled their socks up and showed their ability in these two cup finals.

“It was a very tight game with not a lot of chances – at times it was scrappy and not a lot of great football was played.”

Risi added that the momentum shift could be seen towards the end of the game and the side could have added another late on, only to be denied by the post.

He added “It’s absolutely massive [the result], the laddies were written off at the start of the season and have proved their doubters wrong.

“They were always a good enough team, they just had to prove it to themselves – I’m absolutely buzzing for them.”
