PRESTON Lodge RFC have lifted their first silverware of the season after clinching the East Lothian Cup.

The county’s six rugby teams took part in the one-day pre-season tournament in Tranent on Saturday.

The hosts, Ross High RFC, were in a group with Dunbar and North Berwick, while Preston Lodge were drawn alongside Haddington and Musselburgh.

Ross High and Preston Lodge both progressed from their groups, with the visitors claiming a 14-3 win in the final to lift the trophy.

Ross Watters, Ross High head coach, felt the day had proven a great success.

He said: “It was brilliant.

“It was quite a good day because I cannot remember the last time that all the East Lothian teams competed for the Cup.

“It must have been a while ago and it was good to see all the East Lothian teams together.

“It was a really busy day at the club and it was good to see the club so busy.”

The new head coach was pleased to see his team get some minutes under their belts ahead of the new campaign getting under way.

Haddington travel to Tranent in the first round of fixtures in East Region League Division One on September 7.

Watters said: “We were in a group with Dunbar and North Berwick and we were able to win both our games.

“Both were really competitive, especially against North Berwick where we were two tries down at half-time and managed to score a few unanswered tries and come away with the win.”

Now, it is hoped the tournament will become an annual event on the county fixture card.
