PUPILS from Dunbar Grammar School came out on top at the East Lothian Secondary Schools County Athletics Championship.

The competition was initially delayed due to Storm Hector but took place on June 21 as all six secondary schools in the county competed in a variety of track and field events.

Sixteen records were broken, with Dunbar setting new records in the S1 and senior girls’ high jump; S1 boys’ relay; and S1 girls’ discus en route to taking the title.

Preston Lodge also celebrated setting four new records – pupils from the Prestonpans school set bests in the S3 girls’ shot put, S1 boys’ and girls’ 800m, and S3 girls’ discus.

There were two records for North Berwick High School, in the senior girls’ 800m and the S2 girls relay, and Musselburgh Grammar claimed six new records: senior boys’ high jump; S1 and senior boys’ 200m; senior boys’ relay; S1 boys’ 100m; and S3 girls’ long jump.

Lynda Gilroy, the county’s athletics development officer, told Courier Sport: “Everyone who took part should have been on the podium.

“It was a great day for talent-spotting too and there were a couple of pupils who have been invited to join Team East Lothian to continue their sporting career.”
