A TRANENT boxing gym is celebrating after one of its young fighters was named Eastern District champion.

Sandy Stewart, 14, took the title with a fantastic first-round stoppage at the junior and school boy and girl championships, which were held in Fife last month.

Sandy, who lives in the town, was one of three boxers from the gym who entered the competition and trained hard in preparation.

Mack Murdoch missed out on a chance to reach the final after a split decision on his close semi-final fight and fellow gym-mate Daryl Brown was left disappointed after he travelled to the championships to find no other competitors in his weight.

The gym said it was delighted with the efforts that had gone into preparing for the championships.

A spokesman said: “Each and every one of them trained very hard to achieve their fighting weights, which meant lots of sacrifices had to made by themselves to get there.”
