BADMINTON starlets from East Lothian enjoyed medal success at the Scottish Schools National Secondary Badminton Championships.

Dunbar Grammar School pupil Alastair Campbell retained the U16 boys’ singles title with a hard-fought 21-17, 13-21, 21-14 win over Lanarkshire’s Danny Robson, before he joined older brother Lewis in the U19 boys’ doubles.

The pair were denied the gold medal, but walked away with silver after defeat to Stewart’s Melville pair Calum Atterbury and Ewan Mathieson, the latter from Aberlady.

There was more success in the U19 girls’ doubles, as Preston Lodge High School pupils Laura Moos and Eloise Morris retained their title, while Lois Turnbull reached two finals in the U14 age group.

The North Berwick High School ace took silver in the singles, but claimed gold in the doubles as she teamed up with school-mate Jess Rae to defeat Knox Academy pair Amanda Martin and Rachel Broadley (21-16, 21-14).

Another North Berwick High pair, Jack Riddle and John Arbuckle, won gold in the consolation boys’ singles events, with Riddle taking the U14 title and Arbuckle’s success coming in the U16 age group.

A third gold medal won in the consolation events followed in the U16 mixed doubles, with Tom Johnston teaming up with Rae to clinch the title.

Meanwhile, Euan Campbell, younger brother of Alastair and Lewis, missed out on a medal in the U14 boys’ singles, after he was defeated 21-17, 19-21, 23-21 in a marathon encounter against eventual winner Joseph Carlyle.
