INSPIRATIONAL para-powerlifter Micky Yule is raring to go ahead of the Rio Olympics after returning home victorious from the Invictus Games.

Former Staff Sergeant Yule, from Wallyford, won gold at the Invictus Games in Orlando after a mammoth 190kg lift.

Yule lost both legs after he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Helmand Province in Afghanistan in 2010, and has used powerlifting to form the basis of his recovery.

He spent six days in an induced coma, while he was in hospital for two months before moving to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, in Surrey.

Yule's rise in the sport saw him don Team Scotland colours at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, while he was also a gold medallist at the Invictus Games in London the same year.

The 36-year-old reflected on his gold medal win in Orlando, and told the Courier "It was absolutely amazing.

"After I won, I must've ended up doing about 40 television interviews, and people were asking me if I could help them meet Prince Harry.

"I had to say to them 'I can't do that, he's the main man."

Yule won Team GB's first medal at the games, and became the subject of worldwide media attention.

"I was asked to do an interview for a Spanish radio station.

"So there I was trying to get through this interview, speaking Spanish - and my Spanish is rubbish, so I managed to get my way out of that one."

He was presented his medal by Prince Harry, who is the founder of the games, and Yule hailed Harry, fifth in line to the throne, as "a top lad" for his support.

Micky added: "He's just a really, really good guy.

"I first met him a few years ago when he was chatting about the idea.

"He's not afraid to speak about amputees and mental health injuries, and he does his best for us – we'd be in a much worse place without his support."

Yule, who was cheered to victory by mum Jennifer, wife Jody and daughter Tilly in Orlando, will now turn his attention to the Rio Olympics.

He was back in the gym less than 24 hours after returning to the UK.

Yule told the Courier on Monday: "I was back in the gym this morning and it's all gearing towards Rio now.

"I'll focus just now on my diet and then it'll be about the training, making sure I lose a bit more weight and we'll be good to go.

"Eating rubbish for me is as bad as missing a session, so it's always on my mind."
