FINALS week at East Lothian Indoor Bowling Club got under way on Sunday evening and will come to a conclusion tonight (Friday) with a huge night of action as the finals of the gents’ singles, ladies’ singles, senior singles, gents’ junior singles, ladies’ junior singles and gents’ senior triples are all down for decision (6.30pm).

The main spotlight will be on three-times champion Willie Wood against former Edinburgh IBC champion and East Lothian team captain Billy Mellors in the gents’ singles final.

The 76-year-old bowls legend Wood is hoping to enter the record books as the first person to win four gents’ championship titles at East Lothian IBC and he booked his place in the final with a hard-fought 19-14 win over former two-time champion Scott Kennedy in the semi-final, while Mellors ended the hopes of ex-West Lothian IBC star Scott Logan with a 21-9 triumph.

The ladies’ singles final will be contested between current title holder Janet Fairnie and 2012 champion Dee Hoggan. In their semi-finals, Fairnie ended the title ambitions of former two-time champion Yvonne Veitch with a 21-11 victory, while Hoggan held all the aces in a 21-13 win over Pat Turner.

Scotland Under-17 cap Calvert Allison and junior cap Ewan Fallen go head-to-head in the gents’ junior singles final, while holder Kim Hoggan and Emma Brown contest the ladies’ junior singles final.

The senior singles final features Alan Morgan against Jim McLeod, while the rinks of Ian Paterson and Jim Neilson will battle it out for the right to claim the gents’ senior triples title.

Following the conclusion of tonight’s play, the club is staging a disco for members and guests to celebrate the British and national title successes the club has enjoyed this season.

In finals played on Monday evening, the strong contingent of Andrew Jeffrey, Willie Wood, Scott Kennedy and Billy Mellors edged a 19-17 extra-end thriller against defending champions Mark Johnston, Stevie Thomson, Jamie Higgins and Derek Oliver to capture the gents’ Scottish Fours.

The senior rink of Billy Sinclair, Jim Neilson, Billy Higgins and Alistair Russell triumphed in the Kiwi Quaich Trophy final with a 20-7 win over Jim Ralton.

The rink skipped by Scotland team captain Graham Robertson enjoyed success in the Division 1 play-off final, while the rink skippered by Bill Fotheringham won the Division 2 play-off final.

Meanwhile, in finals played during the course of last weekend, Brian Bissett, Jim Robertson, Jamie Gordon and Willie Wood captured the Top Four title with victory over Colin Cook, Chris Johnston, Calum Darling and Stewart Thomson, while huge congratulations go to Castlepark after they won the East Coast Carpets-sponsored Top Club title following a thrilling victory over Gifford in Sunday night’s final.

East Lothian IBC young star Calvert Allison was part of a Scotland Under-17 side that won a tri-nations international event at the Jim Baker Stadium in County Antrim at the weekend.

The young Scots topped the table just ahead of host nation Ireland thanks to a far superior shot margin bank, while Channel Islands finished in third place.

“I really enjoyed the experience of playing for my country and it was a weekend I will never ever forget,” said Allison.

The climax to the Jock Brodie Senior Challenge Cup, sponsored by Norman T Craig and Co-operative Funeral & Monumental Services, took centre stage at Meadowmill on Wednesday, with the final being contested between East Lothian A and holders Perth.

In last Wednesday’s semi-final action, East Lothian A beat off the challenge of East Lothian B, while Perth proved too strong for Midlothian.

A depleted youth side from East Lothian IBC failed to qualify through from a tough section in Saturday’s East Fife Top 10 tournament. The AGM of East Lothian IBC is on Tuesday evening from 7pm. President Peter Fallen is hoping for a large turnout from his members.
