WHEN TV programmes such as Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor were being broadcast, the contestants were often interviewed at different stages of their participation; and many of them talked about ‘their journey’ within the competition: what a difference it had made to them... how they’d grown through their experience... and how much they had learned.

Although the constant weekly repetition of these or similar phrases may have seemed dull after a while, I think the youngsters were unwittingly voicing something of the true essence of life.

We are all, as human beings, on a journey. Some would say we’re on a pilgrimage, with a known end and with God accompanying us.

Now whether or not you wish to include the God component, for all of us life is still a movement forward – both physically and spiritually.

The journey is a process with intention, purpose and hope.

It’s very different from holidaying or sightseeing, where the pace may slow and the days become unfocussed, but rather our life journey is one where change is expected and accepted, where greater integration is desired, and deep contentment sought.

If we are fortunate, we will hopefully realise that this is a journey that should not be dominated by the need for worldly success and hoards of possessions, but rather one where humility and self-denial plays an important part.

After all, if you plan to journey far in this life then the less baggage you take with you, the easier it will be!

Many people who are universally admired and respected are often ones who have run this journey with wisdom and joy.

I think of Desmond Tutu, who enjoyed every moment, dancing his way through life, whilst also showing great determination to make the lives of his fellow South Africans better.

I think of the saints like Francis, who chose to live a life dedicated to others, holding worldly affects lightly and finding a freedom of spirit.

The vast majority of us may not be well known, or even want to be.

But we all have our own journey to take – and it is up to us to make it count for ourselves and for those we accompany.

I hope that during 2022, we may all follow a good and enlightening path so that at the end of the year, we may find ourselves in a different place, changed for the better, and with a deeper understanding of what it means to be loved and to love. Happy journeying!
