Please could East Lothian Council make it a condition of detailed planning permission for the proposed housing development at Gateside East in Haddington (by Persimmon Homes) that not only should the housing be appropriate to the setting, but the name of the development is changed to something locally relevant.
‘Saxon Fields’ may sound right in the south east of England, but I can find nothing to suggest that Saxons settled in East Lothian or that any Saxon remains have been dug up in the vicinity.
Why not use this as an opportunity to remember some of those who lived and worked at Gateside Farm before it was demolished to make way for what became the Mitsubishi factory? Or else the name could recognise the superb view that the site has towards the Lammermuirs, at least until it is degraded by the building of hundreds more houses at Letham.
