A RAPIST who threatened to reveal intimate images of a woman unless she had sex with him during a campaign of abuse against the victim was jailed for eight years today.
Peter Kelly, 59, claimed that he would disclose photographs and a film featuring the woman unless she had intercourse with him.
He exposed himself to the victim, sexually assaulted her and subjected her to a rape ordeal during an attack at a house in Edinburgh on February 23, 2024.
A judge told him at the High Court in Edinburgh that the effects of his criminal behaviour on her had been "devastating".
Lady Drummond said: "It is clear to me that she lives in constant fear and anxiety because of your behaviour.
"Your sexual offending is made more serious because, as is explained in the charge, you threatened the complainer you would disclose intimate imagery of her unless she had sexual intercourse with you.
"You used fear and intimidation to get what you wanted and that included what you wanted sexually."
Lady Drummond said that only a custodial sentence was appropriate in the circumstances.
The judge noted that Kelly had a criminal record which was short but serious, as it featured a conviction for a firearms offence.
Kelly, formerly of Claverhouse Drive, Edinburgh, had denied a series of charges during an earlier trial but was convicted of the sexual assault and rape.
He was also found guilty of engaging in a course of abusive behaviour towards the woman between October 2022 and July 2024 at locations in Edinburgh and a caravan at Dunbar.
During the abuse, he made a film of the woman in intimate situations without her consent, sent photos to her and threatened to disclose footage and pictures to members of her family and to post them on social media.
He persistently sent her text messages, made calls to her and attended at her home without warning or invitation. He also breached a bail order that stipulated he should not contact or approach the woman.
Defence solicitor advocate Kris Gilmartin said: "He is aware, given the nature and severity of the convictions, that a custodial sentence is inevitable."
Kelly was placed on the sex offenders' register for an indefinite period. He was previously made subject to a non-harassment order banning him from contacting or attempting to contact the victim.
