A POPULAR Thai restaurant in Musselburgh is closing its doors in the New Year after 30 years in business.

Lanna Thai, which was established in 1996, shared the news via social media but has hinted at a "new venture".

The Bridge Street restaurant said it had “proudly” served Musselburgh and surrounding towns for 30 years.

The owners said: “It has been an incredible journey and a true privilege to be part of this community for the past 30 years.

“Our final day of operation will be January 3, 2027.

"We would like to thank all of our loyal customers, friends and families for your continued support over the years.

“You have made Lanna Thai such a special part of our lives.”

They added: “The incredible support at our restaurant from all locals and visitors to the Honest Toun over three decades is something we will truly carry with us for years to come.

“This may be a goodbye to Lanna Thai, but it’s not a goodbye forever… When one door closes, another one opens. A new adventure is on the horizon! But for now, we’ll keep you in suspense.”

In 2016 the restaurant was bought over by Su and Clive and their business partner Thoy, who is still the head chef. Su’s daughter Nam, the manager, has also been serving customers since 2016.

In 2024, Su and Clive decided to move home to Thailand and sell the business to the most recent owner, Medine Altug, who has been operating it since 2024.

Su and Thoy trained up Savaş, who is Medine's nephew, to work alongside Thoy in the kitchen for the last two years.

The team were remaining tight-lipped about the future, saying they planned to keep the "new venture a surprise for the town, as a lot of renovation work will be taking place inside".

The Courier was told: "The Lanna Thai restaurant building will be kept under the current lease holder (Medine) and, once we close on January 3, we will start making the preparations for the renovation.

"At the moment, we can’t comment further on what will be opening in the same building, but it will be a new addition to the town."

Customers took to social media to praise and thank the restaurant.

One post read: “It was our favourite restaurant when we both lived for a few years in Joppa and we came nearly every week until we moved away in different directions.

"No Thai restaurant anywhere else has ever made a better Som Tum than you, and your Weeping Tiger is my all-time favourite.”

Another customer said: “Good luck and thank you for many years of great food."

Another posted: “You do the best Thai food in whole of Edinburgh and surrounding area.

"We have been coming for years and hope you have something exciting to keep feeding us amazing food come January.

“Huge appreciation for the years you have served us, and good luck for what lies ahead!"
