Musselburgh Grammar names six-strong student leadership team

Max Elgin, David Falomo and Elsie Wiggins are the head students, while Macy Laidlaw, Jasmin Notarangelo and Anna Zonova have been named deputy head students.

Jodie Hannan, headteacher, said: “They are a talented and committed group of young people and, in line with our school’s vision of 'together everyone achieves more', all passionate about the power of community in making the Grammar and the wider school community the best place to learn."

Max is currently studying mathematics and science at school and wishes to go to university to study finance.

He plays for the Musselburgh Rugby Club under-18 team. He also competes in golf tournaments, which have allowed him to play against international players and teams, including a college team from the United States.

As a member of the head team, Max is looking forward to working with other students and helping to address issues around the school that affect other students.

He is keen to develop the school’s links with local and national charities to leave a “positive impression” on others and “inspire” the younger students to follow in his footsteps by putting themselves forward for opportunities to apply themselves to “better the school and the local area”.

David is studying three Advanced Highers in mathematics, physics and chemistry, alongside Higher PE. He plans to study software engineering at university.

He is a keen basketball player and, as well as playing for just under four years, has been a member of the Scottish Academy for 3x3 basketball.

He wants to create a “positive impact” in the community that will last for years, as well as planning a Diversity Day to celebrate the richness of different cultures at the Grammar.

Elsie is an keen basketball player for City of Edinburgh Kats and her proudest achievement so far has been winning the Under-18 Scottish Cup in 2024. She is also a community coach at local primary schools, where she has developed her leadership skills.

She works for Musselburgh Racecourse and enjoys interacting with the public.

She is looking forward to what the head team can achieve this year. Her focus is on supporting everyone from S1 onwards to study effectively.

She plans to study mass communications, advertising and public relations at Edinburgh Napier.

Macy is very excited to be part of the leadership team, as it has been an aspiration since S1. Her favourite subjects are Spanish, in which she is taking at Advanced Higher, as well as Higher history and philosophy.

After school, Macy plans to undertake a modern apprenticeship and then go into events management afterwards, as well as doing a lot of travelling.

She works at Enjoy Leisure as a lifeguard and is looking forward to working with her team this year.

Jasmin is studying four Advanced Highers in history, modern studies, English and business, and is planning to study history and politics at university.

Having been involved in pupil voice previously, she is excited to make a positive difference in the school through her involvement in the deputy head student team.

Anna is studying Higher physics and chemistry, Advanced Higher maths and geography, and would like to pursue a career in civil engineering, as she is passionate about helping to make the planet a greener place.

She has been playing golf since she was six and plays competitively across national and international events. She is a proud ambassador of Junior Tour Scotland and a member of Royal Musselburgh Golf Club.

As a deputy head girl, Anna is looking forward to working as a team with other deputies and the head pupils to provide an environment that “everybody can achieve in”. She would like to encourage all students to take on the opportunities they have ahead of them in school and give back to the community.

Macy, Jasmin and Anna will all be working on P7 to S1 transition this year, visiting all the P7 classes across the Grammar’s cluster primary schools before a three-day visit next June.
