Search the Public Notice PortalPLANS for a children’s play area within a village’s new housing estate have been given the go-ahead – despite concerns it could bring a risk of “late night anti-social activity”.
Nearly 200 new homes are being built on Elphinstone’s western edge.
Work is well under way on the site and developers Bellway Homes Ltd (Scotland East) had applied to East Lothian Council for a children’s play park
Drawings included with the application show a carousel, swings, spinner bowler and playhouse.
However, the park, which is on the western edge of the development, did not win favour with everyone.
Four letters of objection were sent to the local authority’s planning department.
Concerns included an increased in risk of dog fouling, as well “anti-social behaviour concerns including potential for increased noise, risk of loitering and vandalism, risk of late night anti-social activity”.
Further issues centred on a potential increase in traffic as “the play park will attract additional visitors”, as well as that original plans had shown the plot would be an open planted area.
Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council did not comment on the proposals.
According to the planning officer’s report: “There is no evidence to suggest that this proposal for a children’s play park would lead to an increased risk of dog fouling, anti-social activity, littering or vandalism, or have any environmental impact in terms of wildlife provision.
“Matters of anti-social behaviour, littering and dog fouling are controlled through other legislation, not planning legislation.”
