EARLIER this month, I had the privilege of visiting the Dementia Café in Musselburgh alongside Katherine Sangster MSP.
I’ve visited the Dementia Café several times now, and hugely enjoy the warmth and atmosphere every time I do. It provides a valuable opportunity to sit down over a coffee with carers, people living with dementia and members of the local community.
Before the visit, I met with Alzheimer Scotland to learn more about the vital work they are doing to ensure people across Scotland can access the dementia care and support they need.
We discussed the significant disparities in access to dementia services across different parts of the country. As dementia care is a devolved issue, I look forward to working with my MSP colleagues to address these challenges and help secure more consistent support for those affected.
What always stands out to me about the Dementia Café is the importance of having a welcoming community space. It offers people the chance to come together, share experiences, and talk openly about both the challenges and positives of living with dementia or caring for someone who does.
The café provides a supportive and friendly environment where no one feels they have to face these experiences alone. This is a huge asset to Musselburgh, I will do everything I can to support these community spaces.
I felt incredibly privileged to listen to people’s stories, hear about their experiences of dementia care, and discuss what more can be done to ensure everyone can access the support they need. These conversations are invaluable and help to inform the work I do on behalf of local residents.
Hearing about your experiences is an essential part of my work as your MP. All of us, including myself, have stories of family or friends affected by dementia and know how hard it can be on those caring for them.
If there is anything I can help with, or if you have any concerns you would like to raise, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You can email me at chris.murray.mp@parliament.uk or call my office on 0131 574 9800 to speak to a member of my team.
Thank you to everyone at the Dementia Café for such a warm welcome and for sharing your experiences with me.
