KEEN stargazers across the county were ready to witness a partial solar eclipse yesterday - but many were left disappointed when the spectacle was mostly covered by cloud.
More than 90 per cent of the sun was obscured by the moon and, in the right conditions, it should have been visible, if you had protective glasses.

However, despite the Met Office predicting clear skies in East Lothian, residents and visitors did not get to experience the full effect as clouds obscured much of the view.
Many people had created homemade viewing devices with colanders or cereal boxes, as the special glasses became hard to come by.

Despite the weather, some managed to take fantastic photos of the event, which was the fullest solar eclipse since 1999.
More than 300 people gathered in Dirleton to witness the spectacle, including children from the local primary school.
Daniel Arnold, of Dirleton Solar Walk and the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, discussed the science behind the event and used his electronic telescope to show the eclipse live to those without glasses via a TV.
