FAMILY of Aiden Hoenigmann were “totally overwhelmed” after more than £19,000 was raised in his memory.
Money from a recent golf day fundraiser will now be used to book a screening session with Cardiac Risk in the Young, testing young people in East Lothian for heart defects before they would otherwise be detected.
Aiden passed away in January 2024 from a heart condition, undiagnosed for two years, but now known to be Brugada syndrome.
In recent months, Aiden’s Heartbeat Memorial Fund has been set up by his mum Fiona to bring screening sessions to the county.
Last month, a memorial golf day was held for the third year, this time raising money for the new charity.
Family, friends and team-mates got together to remember Aiden, who lived in Tranent and was captain at Ross High RFC, with an afternoon of sport, followed by an auction and raffle.
The fundraiser was held at Royal Musselburgh Golf Club and then the rugby club, raising more than £19,000.
A total of 285 raffle tickets were purchased and 316 bids were submitted for the auction.
Aiden’s dad Paul said that the family were “totally overwhelmed” by the success of the event.
He added: “A huge turnout and we raised a huge amount of money.
“It was outstanding and way beyond our expectations.”
Each screening weekend costs in the region of £14,000 and, after such a successful event, the plan is now to move ahead with booking the first session.
