A COUNTY tradesman who struck a man with a sharply pointed implement and left him severely injured must pay his victim compensation.
Jake Bryant, 22, engaged in a struggle with Finlay Frith and lashed out with the implement during the incident on Newcraighall Road in Edinburgh.
Bryant left the man severely injured and the attack on November 29 last year was said to have been to the danger of Mr Frith’s life.
Bryant was arrested and charged with the assault, and he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month, where he pleaded guilty to the offence.
Lawyer Christopher McFarlane, representing Bryant, told the court that his client “accepts he used the implement” during the incident but had shown “significant shame, remorse and embarrassment” for his behaviour.
Mr McFarlane said that Bryant, of Brierbush Road, Macmerry, had “a strong family background” and the assault was “totally out of character” for him.
Sheriff Matt Jackson KC told Bryant that he had caused “terrible anxiety” for his family and, even though the assault “would ordinarily attract custody”, he was prepared to step back from imposing that.
Bryant was instead sentenced to a restriction of liberty order where he must stay within his home address between 7pm and 6am each night for the next four months.
He will also have to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community and must pay Mr Frith compensation of £2,000.
