Three East Lothian school communities have backed new facilities for children with complex additional support needs (ASN).
The plans involve creating specialist ASN provisions at Law and Stoneyhill Primary Schools and Musselburgh Grammar School.
The plan has gone ahead after East Lothian Council carried out statutory consultations from March 3 to May 5, where residents shared their views using online questionnaires, online drop-in sessions, and at events held at each school.
The final reports revealed widespread support, with 87 per cent of Stoneyhill Primary respondents, 92 per cent of Musselburgh Grammar, and 93 per cent of Law Primary consultations’ respondents in favour.
Supporters highlighted the need for better local ASN provision, benefits to mainstream classes, and improved outcomes.
However concerns were raised about the impact on current learners, pupil safety, behaviour, space, traffic, and access.
Officers will prepare a report for discussion at East Lothian Council meeting on August 25, where councillors will agree on the next steps.
Demand for specialist ASN provision in East Lothian rose by 132 per cent from 2020 to 2025.
The council’s existing specialist estate is nearing capacity.
The three new schools have space for expansion and would offer facilities where there are currently none.
