INSTEAD of looking ahead to retirement, a charity service manager is getting ready to celebrate her 60th birthday in style… by jumping out of a plane!
Lorna Gunn is filled with excitement in anticipation of the upcoming challenge, despite a fear of heights which is adding to the nerves.
She “can’t even go up a ladder”, so falling from 10,000 feet in the air will be no easy feat.
Lorna was inspired to take it on after Graeme Barrie completed a bungee jump to raise money for Aberlour Options Lothian, of which she has been service manager for the past four years.
She said: “I got a wee bit carried away with the moment and idea of raising money!
“I just thought, now is the time to do it before I’m too old!”
The charity, based in Prestonpans, supports 23 families in East Lothian and, once she had set her mind to doing the skydive, Lorna asked around to see if any parents would join her.
Fortunately, Vicky Henderson was convinced, and so the pair will take to the skies on August 30.
It comes at a good time too, as both celebrate milestone birthdays this year: Vicky recently turned 40 and Lorna will be 60 in October.
She said: “Instead of retiring, I think I will jump out of a plane!
“It’s all quite exciting.”
They are raising money for Aberlour, which supports children with disabilities to have a better chance in life.
Lorna and Vicky see its work in East Lothian first hand, with every penny raised going towards easing the burden on families.
Money raised in the past has gone toward making Christmas special with parties and presents, funding trips out, and it is hoped that more sensory equipment could be purchased in the near future.
