A NEW plan has been launched to improve support for unpaid carers.
East Lothian Integration Joint Board (IJB) has unveiled its latest Carers Strategy for 2026-2029, aimed at improving recognition, support and outcomes for unpaid carers across the county.
The strategy, developed in partnership with carers and supporting organisations, builds on previous commitments to ensure unpaid carers are valued and supported.
Andrew Cogan, chair of East Lothian Integration Joint Board, said: "This strategy demonstrates the IJB’s commitment to ensuring unpaid carers are recognised as equal partners in care and receive the support they need to maintain their own health, wellbeing and quality of life."
East Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership (ELHSCP) thanked carers, community groups and partner organisations who contributed their time, experiences and stories during the engagement process.
Their input has shaped the priorities and actions that will guide support for carers over the next three years.
The strategy identifies progress in areas such as communication, advice and welfare services, but also highlights ongoing challenges.
It acknowledges that many carers still struggle to navigate complex services and that some only access support once they reach a crisis point.
Despite increased investment and innovation, demand for services, especially short breaks and social care support, continues to exceed capacity.
Councillor Shamin Akthar, cabinet spokesperson for health and social care at East Lothian Council, said: "Unpaid carers make an enormous contribution to the lives of the people they care for and to our communities across East Lothian.
"I’m so pleased to see that this strategy has been shaped by carers themselves and reflects what matters most to them."
The strategy is built around six key outcomes, including early identification of carers, equal access to support, meaningful involvement in care, opportunities for carers to take breaks, and empowerment to influence change.
This challenge is expected to grow with the implementation of the new legal Right to a Break.
