A “VERY sheepish” Spaniel has been reunited with her owner after chasing a bird and getting lost.

Dunbar Coastguard were called out early this morning to investigate a report of a distressed dog on the water’s edge at Belhaven Bay.

Volunteers were concerned that there could be someone in the water and carried out a search for the owner.

However, a spokesperson for the Coastguard revealed that the story had a happy ending.

They said: “It turns out the dog decided to chase a bird all the way from Winterfield before getting herself lost.

“We were fortunately able to reunite a very sheepish Spaniel with her owner thanks to local help.

“Thanks especially to the early-morning swimmer who did exactly the right thing and called us.

“We are relieved it was nothing more serious than a soggy escapee.”

Anyone who sees anything concerning near or in the sea should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

The spokesperson added: “Also, if you do have a dog prone to running away or are visiting a new area, it is worth considering getting a tracking device and ensuring your pet has a microchip and a collar with your contact details to help us rule out anything more serious as quickly as possible.”
