A FOOTBALL match tackling mental health will kick off in Tranent next month.

Penumbra Mental Health is teaming up with Destiny United for a special charity event, celebrating the power of sport, connection and mental wellbeing.

Destiny United was formed in 2023 by former Scotland international – and East Lothian resident – Garry O’Connor and Andrew Stevenson, Destiny Project CEO, with the aim of tackling stigma through community-driven football, creating safe spaces for players while raising public awareness about mental wellbeing.

Now, a fundraiser centred on a friendly football match between the two sides will take place at Ross High RFC.

John Tonner, chairman of Destiny United FC, was looking forward to the event, which runs from 11am to 2pm next Friday (July 3).

He said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for two organisations to come together for a truly important cause.

“Both Destiny United FC and Penumbra do outstanding work in helping tackle the stigma surrounding mental health and creating supportive, inclusive environments for people within our communities.

“We hope this partnership can lead to further support opportunities and pathways into Destiny United FC for individuals who may be struggling with mental health concerns and are interested in getting involved in sport.

“Football can be a powerful tool for improving wellbeing, building confidence and creating a sense of belonging.”

As well as the friendly match, there will also be a beat the goalkeeper challenge, a bake sale and raffle.

Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with Penumbra staff, who will be available throughout the day to provide information about local mental health services and how to access support for themselves or loved ones.

The fundraiser aims to support the regeneration of the garden at Elder Street Services, which provides support for adults in East Lothian experiencing mental health challenges.

The service helps people build confidence, independence and social connections within their local community.

The garden itself is a valued outdoor space where those supported by Penumbra can relax, connect with others, and benefit from spending time outdoors in a safe and welcoming environment.

Organisers hope that the event will not only raise vital funds but also spark conversations about mental health, reduce stigma and strengthen connections across the local community.

Adam Novara, East Lothian operations manager, Penumbra, added: “Elder Street Services supports people across East Lothian on their journey towards recovery, wellbeing and greater independence.

“Our garden space may be small but it plays a big role in the lives of the people we support, providing a safe and welcoming place to relax, connect with others and enjoy the positive impact nature can have on mental health.

“Through this fundraising event, we hope to regenerate and enhance the space so it can continue to support wellbeing, reduce isolation, and create more opportunities for connection and recovery.

“Any support or donation, no matter the size, will make a meaningful difference to the people who use our service every day.”
