FOR nearly six decades, Drew Donaldson has been at the heart of football in Haddington.
His leadership, community spirit and the lasting legacy he leaves for future generations – who will be hard pressed to match his contribution – saw him named Sporting Champion of the Year.
For 59 years, Drew has volunteered at Haddington Athletic FC, serving as president for the past 30. Under his guidance, the club has grown into one of the largest community football organisations in East Lothian, now supporting about 475 children, alongside a women’s team, an over-35s side and inclusive squads, including players with autism.
He played a key role in delivering the town’s 3G pitch, creating space for football seven days a week while significantly boosting participation and community wellbeing.
Drew has also overseen major improvements to the club’s facilities, including the installation of a new 160-seater stand opened last year, to which he personally contributed about 20 per cent of the cost.
During his tenure, the club has also enjoyed success on the pitch, including the first team’s promotion to the East of Scotland Football League Premier Division.
His work has provided generations of local people with opportunities to play, volunteer and feel part of a community, leaving a profound and lasting impact through sport.
Drew was unable to attend the awards ceremony, instead enjoying a well-deserved holiday in Italy, and so the award, sponsored by LocaliQ and presented by regional sale manager Iain Caldwell, was collected on his behalf by deputy chairman Jamie Martin.
Jamie has known Drew for many years and praised his mentorship within the club, saying that he would be “absolutely delighted” when told of the honour.
His example has inspired dozens of volunteers and helped establish a clear pathway from grassroots football through to a strong and loyally supported first team, cementing his influence on the sport in Haddington both on and off the pitch.
