Search the Public Notice PortalTRANENT’S Loch Centre will shut fully in three months’ time for a £5 million refurbishment which will, once completed, see the swimming pool open to the public for the first time since early 2023.
A three-year repair and refurbishment project was confirmed after the pool’s closure due to a fault with the roof, and the final stage of building works will begin in June, lasting 12 months.
No exact date has yet been confirmed but it is anticipated that the improvements will be completed in June next year.
Enjoy Leisure, which runs sports centres in the county on behalf of East Lothian Council, will aim to accommodate all clubs, classes and activities at other facilities across the county, with plans already in place for about 80 per cent of the timetable.
The £5 million of funding was announced during the East Lothian Council budget in 2023 and “there is no doubt about it” three years later, local councillor Colin McGinn stated, with both 2026 budget proposals including confirmation of this figure dedicated to the centre.
In the meantime, Tranent Amateur Swimming Club has been forced to train at other pools, including those at the Mercat Gait in Prestonpans and Musselburgh Sports Centre, over the past three years.
All facilities at the Well Wynd complex – including the gym, soft play and sports hall space – will be closed to the public throughout the 12 months of work.
The centre was built in 1970 and is home to one of East Lothian’s most popular swimming pools.
When discussed at a recent meeting of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, members were reassured to know that the refurbishment would be going ahead as planned.
To accommodate the closure, local theatre group Centre Stage has moved its summer show to earlier in the year, taking place on April 30 and May 1, while Tranent Gala has planned for a change in venue.
The Loch Centre remains a polling station for the forthcoming Scottish Parliament Election and alternative arrangements will be put in place regarding next year’s local council election.
A council spokesperson said: “We are nearing the conclusion of the tendering process to appoint a contractor and building works are expected to get under way at the Loch Centre in June as part of a £5 million repair and refurbishment project.
“Following a comprehensive review, it was determined that closing the centre between June 2026 and June 2027 was the safest and most economical way to carry out the essential repairs.
"Once completed, the works will provide Tranent with a refreshed facility which is fit for the future.
“Funding for the renovation has come from the council’s capital budget.”
