A PUB has been recognised for its support of grassroots sport.

The Victoria Inn in Haddington features in PubAid’s Pubs Power Sport report, which highlights the UK’s top community pubs and was recently launched in Parliament.

The report aims to encourage the Government to formally recognise pubs as part of the UK’s vital social infrastructure.

The report reveals that British pubs collectively raise £40 million each year for grassroots and community sport, supporting 1.7 million people and delivering 6.7 million sports sessions annually.

The Victoria Inn was singled out for its extensive support of Haddington sports clubs.

The pub sponsors teams and provides a social hub for clubs including Haddington Women’s Hockey Club and Haddington Athletic Football Club.

Landlord Craig Douglas has also been involved in coaching junior teams and organising charity sporting events.

Des O’Flanagan, co-founder of PubAid, said: "The Victoria Inn is a shining example of what pubs make possible.

"Behind every statistic is a publican giving time, space and care to keep local teams thriving.

"Pubs like The Victoria Inn are not just serving communities, they’re strengthening them."

The report, supported by Guinness and Sky Business, emphasises the role pubs play in promoting physical activity, mental wellbeing and community cohesion.

PubAid’s 2030 Vision aims to see an additional 25 per cent of community sports clubs partnered with a pub.
