A BRASS band with more than a century of musical heritage has welcomed a visit from its MP.
Douglas Alexander, Lothian East MP, visited the D&M Brass Band at their Prestonpans rehearsal facility to learn more about the group’s work in musical education and community engagement.
During the visit, Mr Alexander met with band chairman Jim Henderson to discuss the band’s history, structure and the challenges facing volunteer-led organisations.
He also met musical director Jim Chamberlain and other members, who performed a medley of James Bond film music.
Mr Alexander said: "It was a real pleasure to meet the members of this band with such deep local roots.
"Their medley of Bond music that they were rehearsing when I arrived sounded brilliant.
"Community music groups like the D&M Brass Band not only preserve a proud cultural tradition but also bring people together across generations.
"The band and its dedicated team of volunteers and players deserve our full support."
The band was formed in 1989 through the merger of the Dalkeith Burgh and Monktonhall Colliery bands, with roots stretching back to 1883.
It recently changed its name to reflect its Prestonpans heritage as it moves toward charitable incorporation.
Entirely self-funded and made up of amateur musicians, the band performs regularly across East Lothian at community events and national competitions.
Jim Henderson, chairman of the band, said: "We were delighted to welcome Douglas Alexander to our Red School rehearsal space and share more about the band’s history and ongoing work in the community.
"Our players, from beginners to long-standing members, are passionate about keeping this tradition alive, and it means a lot to have that effort recognised and supported."
The band has been based at the Red School since September 2021 and welcomes brass players, percussionists, learners, casual musicians and volunteers.
