A HARD-WORKING volunteer offering a helping hand in community events has been recognised for his commitment.

Lewis O’Neill began his volunteering role at The Fraser Centre, Tranent, by helping out with its garden spaces when the space reopened after the pandemic.

His first tasks involved weeding and planting new flowers and vegetables once a week.

As he grew in confidence and developed his skillset, he began taking on more responsibility and now dedicates a lot of his time to volunteering,

Lewis helps to set up weekly events and classes, including the centre’s popular youth music concerts on Saturdays, and assisted at the recent Wee Green Festival.

He received the centre’s Volunteer of the Year Award 2024, which recognises hard-working volunteers who go above and beyond to support local community events.

Lewis was presented with his award in The Fraser Centre last week.

Lewis O'Neill and staff at The Fraser Centre Lewis, 28, is from Ormiston and attended Preston Lodge High School.

He lives at home with his parents, Amanda and James, and three younger brothers, Ollie, Charlie and Struan.

Amanda said: “We are both so proud of him and can’t thank the team at The Fraser Centre enough for making him feel so welcome and included.

“He loves going there and it helps him so much, as it gives him a sense of purpose.”

A spokesperson for The Fraser Centre said: "We had no hesitation in nominating Lewis for the award and he joins a great list of volunteers who have all helped The Fraser Centre grow.

"He is very reliable and carries out all his duties perfectly every week.

"We are so grateful for his help, and he is a popular member of our team with our staff, volunteers and visiting organisations."
