A PETITION to ensure a new performing arts facility is built if The Brunton is demolished has passed 5,000 signatures.
The petition was started last October, when East Lothian Council was about to debate the closure and demolition of the Musselburgh building.
More than 1,360 people signed in the first three days.
It was acknowledged at the meeting where the facility's permanent closure was confirmed, and two amendments were agreed: to look at providing a replacement and to seek funding from bodies such as the Scottish Government.

A public consultation was planned to begin early this year, but no announcement has yet been made.
The petition was begun by East Lothian resident Mark Becher.
He said: "Since beginning the petition in late autumn, I have been overwhelmed by the response to it and by the support of members of the public, particularly in East Lothian, who have signed it.
"As the fastest-growing region in Scotland with an ever-increasing population, I, along with many others, feel that East Lothian Council and the Scottish Government must act to ensure that East Lothian continues to have a centre dedicated to the promotion of the arts."
