COCKENZIE Harbour will be closed for a week for repairs, East Lothian Council has announced.

In February, the Courier reported that pedestrian access to the West Pier at Cockenzie Harbour had been closed off with fencing after damage.

The harbour is now set to be closed from Sunday until next Sunday (December 22) for repairs on the West Pier.

Preparatory work is already under way, with the actual repair work scheduled to get started on Monday.

The repairs aim to address the storm damage and ongoing deterioration caused by wave action, the council said.

The closure is for safety reasons.

The repairs are funded by East Lothian Council's capital budget.

Councillor John McMillan, cabinet spokesperson for environment, economic development and tourism, said: "I am pleased work is going ahead to help repair and protect this important and historical asset to the community.

"Council officers have worked with Cockenzie and Port Seton Community Council, the harbourmaster and harbour users to put these arrangements in place and appreciate their support."

The popular walking and cycling route the John Muir Way will also be closed from the west side of the former Cockenzie Power Station site to the east side during the repair period.

A diversion will be in place along the B1348 on Edinburgh Road.

Boat users have already been informed about the closure and enabling works have been conducted to provide necessary access for plant, equipment and materials.
