A SPECIAL service uniting congregations throughout Haddington takes place on Sunday.

The ecumenical service at St Mary’s Parish Church is part of Christian Aid Week.

The focus this year is on Burundi in east Africa, where 70 per cent of the population suffer from malnourishment and poverty.

Many people have to depend on finding casual work each day to buy food for the evening.

The service in Haddington takes place at 11am and a spokesperson for the town’s Christian Aid group said: “Thank you to Alison McDonald, Liz O’Ryan and John Vischer for organising this service.

“Please come along to that if you are able, and feel free to bring your Christian Aid envelopes, which have been distributed to the congregations of West Church, St Mary’s and Holy Trinity prior to Christian Aid Week.”

Committee members had a stall at Haddington Farmers’ Market last month for the first time, while, on June 22, a midsummer afternoon tea takes place in the Trinity Centre, or the Rectory Garden, weather permitting.

In September, the group will take part in its sponsored tartan walk.
