More must be done to tackle anti social behaviour on buses according to the head of a community group.

It comes after a bus was forced to stop on Tranent High Street due to alleged disruption from youths throwing stones at the bus and getting on and off multiple times.

Mike Falconer, chair of the town’s community council, said this was a wider issue impacting the country.

He said: “This is something we have been talking about for a while and have been raising concerns to higher up bodies.

“We discussed this with the association of community councils and I know Ralph Averbuch from Pencaitland Community Council has been vocal about it too.

“We’ve raised it with Paul McLennan and are encouraging people to raise their concerns to police too. These are the kinds of things that can be raised at CAPP meetings too.

"I am very concerned about this. It's totally unacceptable."

Concerns had been raised in a Tranent Facebook group about an incident on a bus on High Street on Tuesday in which several youths threw stones at the windows on the bus resulting in the driver being forced to stop the vehicle.

Some raised concerns that the incident happened opposite the town’s police station, yet there was no help offered from officers.

However, Mr Falconer said he did not think this criticism was valid.

He added: "The station is not manned all the time and even if it was it may have been hard to see what is going on.

“This is a bigger issue than just Tranent. It is a national thing and we need more support from politicians.

“It’s not just about the few, and it is a few, ruining it for the many, but also about ensuring safety of those on the bus too.”
