A CLOSED building in the heart of Tranent has been put up to let after plans for a takeaway and shop at the premises appear to have fallen through.

The Plough Inn pub closed its doors in 2020 and was originally earmarked to be turned into an Indian restaurant.

Those proposals fell through and fresh plans, looking to split the pub in two and create a shop and takeaway, were given the green light in November 2022.

However, after renovation works within the premises, the building has now had metal shutters placed outside and a To Let sign placed on the building.

Mike Falconer, chair of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council, told the Courier: “I’m not sure what is going on with the building at the moment.

“Work had been going on inside for a while but then about four or five weeks ago the shutters were put in place and a To Let sign put up.

“We’d been aware of the plans for a shop and takeaway but that looks like it has not materialised. We just hope someone comes and takes it on soon.”

Councillor Lee-Anne Menzies, ward member for the town, added: “I have not been made aware of plans for the building and only really know what everyone else knows.

“Personally, I don’t think the takeaway and shop plans were really what the town needed at the moment. Tranent has an abundance of similar businesses, perhaps an Indian would have been more unique.”
