TWO Tranent residents were delighted when their trip to the shops turned into a dash for free goods that got them food and groceries worth a combined £232, thanks to Snappy Shopper.

Louise Macaulay said being invited to take part in the basket dash challenge at Premier Store on Muirpark Road was “a scream”.

And Mags Gillan said she was “very surprised” when she was invited to join in.

The two women were each given 60 seconds to fill a basket with as many things as they could, with it all being paid for by Snappy Shopper, cheered on by Snappy Shopper rep Ian Barclay and a crowd of other shoppers. Alcohol and vapes were excluded from the deal.

The Tranent store is one of many on the delivery app service, which allows people to order groceries to be delivered to their homes.

Louise said: “It was so much fun, it was hilarious. It was such a scream.

“I do shop there often and do use Snappy Shopper, and I went into the shop the night before to get the layout.

“The first aisle is all bread and rolls and cake, and I didn’t need any of that, so where I was standing at the second aisle it was all tins and soup.

“People were saying I had bird seed in my basket!

“I work in Ward 3 at East Lothian Community Hospital and in Ward 1 they feed their birds, so I’ll bring them in tomorrow so they can have the bird seeds.

“My husband Calum said ‘You’ve got dog food!’ and we’ve not got a dog but I just wasn’t thinking. But I do have my sister’s dog sometimes, so I’ll store that.

“Seeing my friends and family there cheering me on, I thought, just go for it! Their adrenaline was keeping me going. Sixty seconds isn’t long but it felt longer.

“It was so much fun.”

Mags, who collected goods including coffee, sweets, cleaning products, juice and soup, added: “It was absolutely fab, great fun, and your adrenaline hits the highest it can go.

“I got dog and cat food for the Pets Food Bank East Lothian, which I run, and the people in the shop were cheering me on.

“The shop is beautiful and the staff did great having it all ready for me and Loopy Lou!”

Anila Ali, who owns and manages the shop with her husband Zulfiqar, said: “It was quite the buzz; the crowd that came along were amazing.

“It was chaos, a lot of energy, a lot of noise, but it was all worth it.

“Louise, who went first, won £123 in her basket, and Mags won £109 in her basket so there was not a lot between them.

“A couple of glass bottles got knocked off shelves but nothing broke and it was easy to clear up!

“It put Snappy Shopper on the map and was good chaos!”

The Courier and Snappy Shopper are teaming up to give new Snappy Shopper customers £10 off an £11 shop – see page 17 of this week’s Courier for full T&Cs.
