LAST month, we launched our East Lothian Courier Foodbank Appeal, and we’re asking our generous readers to dig deep and help out the county’s vital foodbanks and food initiatives in any way they can.

Now, we’re taking a closer look at a few more of the organisations and sponsors involved with our appeal.

In next week’s issue, we’ll be including a donation bag which readers can fill with goods for the various groups.

There will be lots of convenient locations for you to drop off your bag – we’ll carry a full list in next week’s issue

East Lothian Courier:

So please, if you can, take part in our appeal and help improve the lives of people in dire need – any donation you can make, no matter how small, will be hugely appreciated.

Belmont Group

BELMONT Group, one of the sponsors of the Courier’s Foodbank Appeal, was founded by John Martin in 1964.

Utilising the expertise he gained as a mechanic with a large company called Rossleigh in the 1950s, he set up in business on his own in the ‘Lock up down the Lane’ in Edinburgh.

John built his business from the outset on a philosophy of customer care. He moved from the Lane to a garage in Corstorphine, named ‘Belmont’ after an imposing house in the area.

The Belmont name is still used today and is well known and respected by the Edinburgh and Lothians motoring public.

A spokesperson for the company, which is based in Wallyford, said: “Our approach to customer care adopts policies that promote our social responsibility.

“Whilst maintaining a profitable business model, it should always operate in a manner that benefits society and colleagues.

“We have always promoted volunteering, engaging in ethical practices and also supporting many forms of ‘giving back’ to the local community.

“This approach supports our corporate aim, that is that we are a profitable, efficient and innovative leader in the motor industry. We strive for continuous improvement in the quality of the products and services which we provide to all our customers, both internal and external.

“We operate within an ethical framework in which staff work and co-operate with other people and organisations for the benefit of the community.

“We achieve this through the use and development of quality premises and equipment, complemented by well trained, committed employees. Behind every car, a company that cares.”

On why the company was getting involved in the appeal, Duncan Cunningham, operations director at Belmont Group (Wallyford), described doing so as “the right thing to do”.

He said: “The past few years, we have focused quite a lot on local support groups and charities.

“It has been a really worthwhile thing to do. It gets the staff involved and is a good fit with our company ethic.”
